Honoring our ancestors

Ashlee Langas

This time of year is filled with playful tokens of the spirit world, and fun-loving nods to ghosts and goblins, but the origins of these celebrations go much deeper and stretch across many cultures and traditions as a time to honor those who came before us and have passed.

In Latin American cultures the Day of the Dead is about honoring the ancestors and connecting to the wisdom and help that they have to offer us even from the other side.

In a contemporary way, connecting to our ancestry can be a powerful way to understand more about what we have come from and why we are the way we are. Understanding the experiences of our family line can give us clues into why we may have some of the challenges we do, and honoring the struggles and bravery of those who came before us can give us a sense of what strength and power is running through our veins, available for us to call on in any moment.

In addition to the usual tricks and treats this holiday season, see if you can tune in to a deeper meaning of the season and explore what curiosities and connections you have with your ancestral lines. Try committing a yoga class or meditation to thanking those who came before you. Of, if you're feeling really witchy, see if you can ask for a message of wisdom from them :).

MANTRA: I am grateful to those who paved the way for me to be where I am today, and I thank them by doing my work to prepare a better future.
